Career Training:

How do I become an EMT or paramedic?

EMT and paramedic applicants must be legally eligible to work in the United States, have graduated from high school or have a GED, and meet the physical requirements of the job, as certified by a licensed physician. Guardian College has free online GED preparation available for interested students. High school courses in biology, anatomy, and health professions are helpful, but not required.

How much does it cost?

Certification Level Cost Transfer Students w/
EMT Basic
EMT Basic $1250 N/A
EMT Basic Fast Track $1250 N/A
Advanced EMT $1250 + either EMT Basic class
EMT Paramedic $9000 + either EMT Basic class
EMT Paramedic Fast Track $9000 + either EMT Basic class

Books and equipment are included in the cost listed above.

Additional costs include immunizations and physical exam, applicable fees to obtain high school transcript or GED, driver's license, background check, medical insurance, cost of clothing for clinical contacts, National Registry testing, travel, computer, and internet access.

What if I already have my EMT Basic certification?

EMT Basics are encouraged to transfer into our EMT Advanced or EMT Paramedic programs. All transfer students must attend a mandatory student orientation and basic skills review before the beginning of their Advanced or Paramedic class.

Do you have Financial Aid?

While we do not offer Federal Financial Aid, we have payment plans for career training classes. We can set up automatic payments by credit card and also accept third party payments by employers and government agencies. Check with our admissions officer for information on programs you may qualify for.

Community Education:

What classes do I need for a daycare license?

Most daycare providers need certification in infant/child CPR and first aid. The HeartSaver course and the First Aid course satisfy this requirement.

How long does the certification last?

Certification cards are valid for two years; however, some licenses require annual renewal of certification.

What are the classes like?

Classes are led by certified instructors and include audiovisual presentations, class discussions, and skills practice. CPR students should expect to spend much of the time on the floor (on their knees) practicing skills. Dress accordingly and feel free to bring a pillow or pad if needed.

Continuing Education:

Are your courses accredited?

All of our AHA classes (BLS for HCP, ACLS, PALS) are accredited. We are pursuing CECBEMS accreditation for our other CE classes.

How do I get on a waiting list?

Call the office at (208) 321-4744 and ask for continuing education.

Instructor Development

I am an EMT or paramedic. How do I become an Idaho EMS Instructor?

Idaho requires that all instructors have a minimum of three years field experience before becoming an instructor. An additional course in adult education methodology is required (40 hours) as well as an instructor orientation/update by the EMS Bureau to learn Idaho specific information. New requirements coming soon will require EMS instructors to be mentored by an experienced instructor.

I need to renew my ICEE instructor certification. Do you have courses available?

The EMS Instructor course satisfies all the requirements for ICEE instructor renewal. Additional mini-courses may be developed to meet specific demand.

I have an EMS instructor, but my students are not doing well. Can you help?

Our experienced instructors can sit in on classes, review curriculum and procedures, and offer a personalized instructor development plan to improve the skills of certified EMS instructors. The EMS Instructor course is another way to have instructors learn new techniques for engaging students, organizing curriculum, and polishing their skills.

Public Access Defibrillators:

I've seen AEDs at the airport and the mall. What other places should have them?

AEDs are of particular benefit wherever large numbers of people gather (over 500) or in areas where people at high risk for cardiovascular events live, work, or play. Examples are libraries, senior centers, shopping centers, golf courses, fitness centers, schools, and churches.

Is there a liability issue for having an AED if someone dies or is disabled if we use it?

Good Samaritan laws cover the use of AEDs by persons trained in their use. AED manufacturers also indemnify their products to cover the owner and user of their products. Not having (or using) an AED when they are beginning to be considered usual first aid equipment, or when they are mandated (as they are in some states) may be grounds for a lawsuit.

Can I just buy an AED online and put it in my office?

Idaho law requires that public access AEDs have medical direction and be purchased by prescription. Guardian College offers these services through its medical director for a reasonable fee. Guardian College also offers placement assistance, payment plans, and other personal service not available online or at retail outlets.

What services does Guardian College offer to help our organization implement a
PAD program?

Our trained specialists can do a site review to determine the number and type of AED best suited for your needs. We can provide you with the accessories, training, medical direction, and service needed to keep your AED and your staff ready to respond in an emergency. In case you need to use your AED, we can provide replacement pads quickly and review the event for quality assurance purposes.

Mobile Training Team

How do I get a CPR class taught at my location?

Call us and let us know the number of students you need to train and we'll schedule your class.

Where do you send your instructors?

Our EMS instructors travel worldwide. CPR instructors usually travel throughout the Treasure Valley free of charge to our customers.

Can you teach any class, anywhere?

EMS courses taught in other states must meet the requirements of that state unless they are taught on Federal or tribal land. International courses are generally taught at US military facilities. It is usually more cost effective to have the instructor travel rather than sending many students to a central location.
